☝️ INTRODUCE ACTIVE LISTENING
Connect this activity to the Community Agreement:
We have agreed to respect and support one another during this training. One way we can practice that agreement is by listening carefully when another person is speaking.
Introduce active listening:
Active listening means listening with your full attention and effort to understand. It helps you understand the person who is speaking, and it helps that person feel supported.
Sometimes, while another person is speaking, our minds wander or we begin thinking about what we will say next. When we listen actively, we bring our attention back to the speaker.”
Active listening is a useful skill for an entrepreneur and a leader. It can help us understand our customers, business partners, family members, and other people in our community.
Explain the three active-listening tips that participants will practice:
-
Give your full attention when someone is speaking to you - try not to interrupt.
-
Listen for the emotions (think-feel-do cycles) behind the words, and try to be calm and understanding even if you disagree with what is being said.
-
When it is your turn to speak, begin by repeating back what you have heard (“What I heard you say was…”)
Prepare participants for the combined activity:
You do not need to remember every detail. Today, listen for one success the person is proud of and one quality that helped the person succeed.
💬 GROUP DISCUSSION
Bring the group back together.
Invite two or three brief responses:
- How did sharing your successes and qualities make you feel?
- How did you feel when your partner listened carefully and repeated back what she heard?
- What helped you listen carefully when your partner was speaking?
Thank participants:
“Thank you for sharing and for celebrating the strengths and courage that you heard from one another.”
