4.2 — Planning for Your Time

4.2.3 – Part 1: Time Mapping

Time Mapping

  • Take the participants through a process of identifying how they spend their day (all the 24 hours).
  • Participants have this image in their worksheets and they should make marks around the entire 24hrs, beginning with 00:00, anything they do after that until they fully rise in the morning, etc.
  • Which time is used for your business or income activities, and which part is not?
  • Instruct participants to identify (mark) the time used for their enterprise in the 24hr clock.

👤 Small Groups

Form small groups (of #? people)

  • Instruct groups to discuss ideas on the following questions and identify actions they can take to transform the mindset. The facilitator may give a handout or prepared flip chart with sample responses to each questions a-c below:
  • What are the attributes that successful business people have and you too have but you are not utilizing optimally? For example:
    • Time
    • Planning ability
    • Being strategic (“thinking ahead”)
    • Physical resources (ex. land, equipment)
    • Good weather forecasts and information
    • Market access or connections
  • Think about the parts of your day that are not used for earning an income. Some of these activities you may enjoy, but they might also be unwise uses of your time and brain power. Think about those uses of at home, at work or even while attending this training that might be “wasteful” in your opinion. Each person may have a different opinion, but some might include:
    • Passing vehicles and passers by/ using matatu or bodaboda
    • Children playing nearby
    • Phone calls during your working time
    • Visiting neighbours, relatives, more than you want to
    • Sports Betting
    • Playing cards – Matatu
    • Evening walks
    • Gossiping
    • Using your time on less productive activities like hunting rodents/ lying under a tree because it is hot
  • When you look at the good things that the successful person does and the rest of us do not do, and the time wasters we have just named, which of those aspects/things are within your ability to change? For example:
    • Change attitude to look at business, as our office and profession/career
    • Use our brains more to think of productive activities
    • Use our muscles more to engage in productive work
    • Use our time better to make money
  • Make plans for our time and money
  • Visit the successful businesses to acquire knowledge
  • Convert some of the existing assets (e.g. produce) into cash for a well-planned business activity
  • Volunteers will share their feedback on how they intend to better utilize their brains and time (c. above).

👤 INDIVIDUAL WORK

  • Look at your time again and add more notes to your participant worksheet underneath their clock:
  • What time do I have that brings in money?
  • What time have I discovered that does not bring in money?
  • What is the redundant time I have?
  • How much money do I lose in terms of unutilized and underutilized hours?
  • What are my time wasters and how will I change my situation?
