5.1 — Growth Steps

5.1.1 – Grace Clears the Way

🔑 Introduce the idea of Growth Steps 👣

  • We all know of issues we want to work on, but we’ve been stuck for a while and don’t know how to start.
  • We often wait until it gets really bad, or wait longer than we wanted to. Sometimes we feel stuck and it’s hard to begin.
  • Growth steps are small actions that can get us unstuck.

📘 GRACE CLEARS THE WAY

Share the following story:

  • The people of the village used to walk a short way across a field to get to the well.
  • Over time, the path was overgrown, branches piled up and it made it difficult to pass.
  • So the villagers would have to walk around the bush, which took an extra hour every day, carrying water.
  • Everyone said that someone should clear the path.
  • Grace noticed one day that she had taken over two hours a day to get water. Her mother, who was old now, could no longer make that walk.
  • She, like others, thought about clearing the path many times, but it would take many days, even weeks to clear the path, and she believed she didn’t have any time (limiting belief), so she never began.
  • After a long tiring day when she collected water, she was exhausted and sat on the floor of her house. She saw a machete - she thought that would be useful to start cutting the brush.
  • So the next morning, she took the machete with her and cut the brush, only for 5-10 minutes, then went the long way to get the water.
  • Every day that she fetched water, she was able to make a little more progress on clearing the brush for the short path to the well.
  • After a week, a neighbor asked what she was doing? Impressed, the neighbor joined Grace the next day, with her own machete.
  • After 3 weeks, Grace and her neighbor were able to clear the path, not just for themselves, but also others in the village.

💬 QUESTIONS FOR THE GROUP

  • What is the moral of the story?
  • What are the things you think you need? (capital, resources, etc.) but usually there is something small that can be done right now, with the resources we have?
  • What pain are you going through because you have not yet cleared a path?
  • What is the long path you are walking because you haven’t started working on your business / enterprise?
  • What do you have now to start taking small steps?
  • What is something that you’ve wanted to do something about, but don’t know where to begin?
  • We often feel like we don't have time. Think about the things that you DO spend time on right now - are there things that you can bundle together to make it easier to move towards a goal?
  • (For example: When you go to the market to buy food, is there someone you can speak to about where you may sell your goods)

Time: 30 minutes / Key Messages / Learning Outcomes

  • 10 - Writing Growth Steps
  • 5 - Finding a peer buddy
  • 5 - Closing Discussion — You are the expert on your own life: You already have many answers and the wisdom to make a change if you believe it’s important to do so.

It’s okay if you don’t complete the growth step – It’s only 7-days, so you can choose a new growth step if this one doesn’t work - or choose your next one when you do complete it! 👣

To make a personal behavior change, look closer at your values, your patterns and your motivations. Then start small with specific Growth Steps. — Make consistent meaningful behavior changes (action commitment; intrinsic motivation)

🔑 CHOOSING YOUR CHANGE

  • You are the expert on your own life and you already have many answers and the wisdom to make a change.
  • It’s time to pick something important to work on and choose your next step.
  • It’s okay if you don’t complete the growth step – It’s only 7-days, so you can choose a new growth step if this one doesn’t work - or choose your next one when you do complete it! 👣

👤 GROWTH STEPS

  • Open your “Growth Steps” worksheet:
  • There are 4 questions to answer and choose your next growth step.
  • I will give you ~2 minutes to write or draw your ideas for each question.
  • Read each of the parts of the process (below) while participants follow along in their packets.

⚠️ Note: If people are not comfortable writing, you could have people get in to pairs to think and share thoughts for each question. They should at least try to write an answer to the final question that is the “Growth Step”.

PROCESS (2 MINUTES EACH) / EXAMPLE:

AWARENESS: What is something you want to prepare or change about your life? before receiving PDM funds? What is something in your enterprise plan that you want to make progress on? What behaviors have you tried to make progress? What will you need to change? (Example: I have not been saving enough money. I have to pay my loan back soon, and I am not ready.) MEANING: Why is it important for you to address this issue? (Understanding this can keep you motivated when you encounter challenges.) (Example: I need to begin saving, even small amounts. It will feel good to pay back my initial loan and be eligible for a bigger loan later.) SHIFT / Reframe: When you look in the mirror: What do you know about yourself that makes me feel powerful to make a new change? (Example: I am motivated to improve my financial situation; I have energy for my business and goals; I am good at counting money and have a separate purse ready for my savings.) 👣 GROWTH STEP: What is your next step to move forward to get to my vision? Choose a specific action that will move you towards your goals and address the issue in focus. (Example: I will maintain a cash book each day at my store this week and set aside at least 200 UGX each day as the final transaction.) 👣 Double check that your GROWTH STEP is: Specific → What will you do exactly? Measurable → How will you know when it’s complete? Achievable → Does it make sense with your schedule? Relevant → Related to the bigger issue Can be done in 7-days or less

👤 FINDING A PEER BUDDY

  • Group formation:
  • Look around the group and find a person that you can stay in contact with during the next weeks.
  • When you find your peer buddy, share your contact information and write it in your participant packet (or phone if you have one).

Note: If there are people who don’t find a peer-buddy, you can offer the idea that there can be a group of 3 or 4 – if those are the people that are most ready to stay in contact together.

  • Group sharing & planning
  • Take 5-mins to quickly share your Growth Steps with each other. You can start with the final action you chose, and when you will do it.
  • Remember to listen actively when other people share, and take turns so everyone has a chance to share.
  • If something isn’t clear, you can clarify

CLOSING MESSAGES

  • Remind everyone to be kind and supportive with each other, and with themselves:
  • It’s okay if you don’t complete the growth step – It’s only 7-days, so you can choose a new growth step if this one doesn’t work - or choose your next one when you do complete it! 👣
  • What matters is that we continue to learn and not stay stuck if it’s important to change. 💪

🔑 KEY TAKEAWAYS

  • You are the expert on your own life: You already have many answers and the wisdom to make a change if you believe it’s important to do so.
  • To make a personal behavior change, look closer at your values, your patterns and your motivations. Then start small with specific Growth Steps.
  • No matter what the issue is, you can find some small way to make differences in your behaviors that will add up to a big change over time.

Provide some extra encouragement and celebrate everyone’s participation in this empowering personal process. 🎉 💪

📝 Knowledge Check: 5.1.3 – My Growth Steps

  1. While working on their plans and finding their next Growth Step, one of your trainees asks for help in deciding a good step to try next. They have identified that they tend to procrastinate on long term projects at work and want to change this behavior. How would you work with this person to identify their next Growth Step? What questions would you ask?

    Your answer
  2. What would you say to someone who creates a growth step 'to think more positively from now on'

    Your answer
  3. After telling the story of Grace, a man says 'Grace's problem was small. I already have a large debt. A small step won't clear that' What would you say to that?

    Your answer
  4. What would you say if most people says that they can't do anything until the money is their hand, but the date has been postponed and you don't know when it will be transfered' What do you say to them?

    Your answer
  5. Put these facilitator actions in order: A. Guide participants through the 4-question Growth Steps worksheet B. Tell the "Grace Clears the Way" story and debrief it C. Help participants find a peer buddy and share their Growth Step D. Bridge to a short review of participants' Enterprise Plans

    • B → D → A → C
    • B → A → D → C
    • D → B → A → C
    • B → D → C → A
  6. Your group has an odd number of participants, and one person is left without a peer buddy after everyone else has paired off. What's the best move?

    • Pair that person with yourself as the facilitator for the rest of the program
    • Fold them into an existing pair to make a group of 3, as the Handbook allows
    • Tell them they'll need to complete the accountability check-ins alone
    • Re-shuffle everyone's pairs to try to make it even
  7. Which of these two fallbacks — discussing in pairs instead of writing, or grouping 3–4 people instead of finding exactly one partner — do you expect to need more often with your specific group? Does having the fallback already decided make you feel more prepared to handle it in the moment?

    Your answer
